Privacy Policy
This policy applies to the Motorways app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch (together, “the app”), provided by SuperArmstrong LTD (“we”, “us”). The app shows live motorway speeds and traffic incidents for motorways in England, using traffic data published by National Highways. The free version of the app displays adverts, and Motorways Pro is an optional in-app subscription that removes them.

Short version
- No account, no email, no sign-in form. The app works without you giving us any personal details.
- Your location never leaves your device. It is used on-device only to sort incidents by distance. It is not sent to us or stored by us.
- We keep one record per subscription purchase (the App Store receipt) so your Motorways Pro entitlement works.
- The app shows adverts served by Google AdMob. To show adverts, Google may process certain information about your device and how you use the app, as set out below.
What we collect and why
1. Location — on your device only
The app requests when-in-use location access. Your location is used on your device only to:
- sort incidents and junctions by distance from you, and
- show distances in miles and yards.
Your location is never transmitted to our servers, never stored off your device, and never linked to anything you do in the app. If you deny location access, the app still works in full — you simply lose nearest-first ordering.
2. Device identifier
On first launch, the app generates a random device identifier (a UUID pair) stored in your device's Keychain. It is used so our server can recognise the device in order to:
- apply your free daily lookup allowance, and
- recognise your Motorways Pro entitlement after you subscribe (including on the Apple Watch app, which registers its own separate identifier).
The identifier is random, not a device serial number, and is not linked to your name, email address, or Apple ID. Deleting the app removes it from your device.
3. Purchase records (Motorways Pro only)
If you subscribe to Motorways Pro, the purchase is made through Apple's in-app purchase. For each purchase we store the App Store transaction record (the signed receipt Apple provides, including Apple's customer number, the product, the purchase date, and subscription state). This is the only persistent purchase data we keep, and we keep it solely to:
- grant and maintain your Pro entitlement,
- handle renewals, and
- comply with Apple's requirements for subscription management and refunds.
We do not see your Apple ID, payment method, or billing details — Apple handles all payment.
4. Advertising (Google AdMob)
The free version of the app displays adverts served by Google AdMob (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC). To serve, measure and — where you consent — personalise adverts, Google's advertising SDK may process information such as:
- device and advertising identifiers (including the iOS advertising identifier),
- device characteristics (model, operating system, language, network/carrier),
- your interactions with adverts (impressions, taps, conversions),
- coarse or approximate device location, where your device settings allow it.
Google may combine this information with other data it holds from its other services, and may use it to personalise and measure adverts, as described in Google's own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
Your choices:
- The app will ask your permission before tracking you for personalised adverts. You can decline the prompt, or change your decision any time in Settings → Motorways → Tracking. The app will continue to show adverts even if you decline.
- You can adjust advertising personalisation at https://myadcenter.google.com/ (see also https://support.google.com/answer/2973284).
- Subscribing to Motorways Pro removes adverts entirely.
What we do not collect
We do not collect or store:
- your name, email address or any account details (there is no account system),
- your location (on our servers — see above),
- analytics or usage statistics of your behaviour in the app,
- crash reports or diagnostic data.
The app does not contain any analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. Apart from Google's advertising SDK (described above), all networking goes directly to our own API server.
Subscriptions
Motorways Pro is an auto-renewing subscription purchased through the App Store. Apple charges your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase, and the subscription renews automatically until cancelled. You can manage or cancel it any time in Settings → App Store → your name → Subscriptions. See Apple's Standard Terms and Conditions for Auto-Renewing Subscriptions.
How we share your data
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data, and we do not share your personal data for analytics. The only sharing is:
- Google — for advertising, as described above, acting under its own privacy policy.
- Apple — transaction data is processed by Apple as part of in-app purchase; Apple may see your purchase under its own privacy policy, which covers your Apple ID.
- National Highways / NTIS — we receive public traffic data from them; we send them no user data.
- Where we are required to do so by law.
International transfers
We operate from the United Kingdom. Google processes data for advertising outside the UK and the European Economic Area; where it does so, it relies on its standard contractual terms and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to protect your rights.
Children
The app is a road-traffic information tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
Data retention
- Free-tier usage counters reset daily and are not retained.
- Device records are kept while the device uses the app, and deleted after 12 months of inactivity.
- Purchase records are retained for as long as required to honour Apple's cancellation, refund, and reconciliation rules.
- Data held by Google for advertising is retained according to Google's own retention periods (see Google's privacy policy above).
You can request deletion of your device's record at any time by contacting us (see below) or by deleting the app and waiting for the inactivity period to elapse.
Security
We use commercially reasonable measures to protect the limited data we hold: traffic is encrypted in transit (TLS), credentials and tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain, and server access is restricted. No password is ever set or stored — there is nothing to leak in an account system.
Your rights (UK GDPR)
You may contact us at support@motorwaysapp.uk to request:
- access to the data we hold about your device,
- correction of any data that is inaccurate,
- deletion of your device's record,
- or to object to certain processing.
We respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): https://ico.org.uk
For adverts served by Google, Google's tools (above) and Apple's iOS settings are the practical way to control how much is used about you.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy we will update this page and the app's release notes. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the current version.
